SHREDDED WHEAT BLOTTERS

[If you are trying to identify a card that looks something like a blotter, printed on either light tan or gray cardboard, check under BOX INSERTS.  These were cards used in cereal boxes to separate the layers of Shredded Wheat, and are also very collectible.  But Shredded Wheat blotters were, for the most part, done in a much higher quality, more colorful printing, and all had the typical blotter backs.]

The Shredded Wheat Company began very early to use blotters as a promotional tool. Some of the earliest were fairly large (9¼x4″) and printed in black & white, or in two colors, but even before 1910, 4 color printing was used. The same fine lithography that was used for pamphlets and post cards was used to prepare some lovely blotters, advertising the various uses of Shredded Wheat.

It should be noted that many blotters have a very similar appearance – with slight differences in text or headlines. Do not presume at first glance that you have a particular blotter because it looks familiar. There are a number with the heading “In the Cold Days…,” for example, but with other differences which distinguish them one from the other.

Many of these blotters I do not have in my possession, and hence the descriptions are in some cases very sketchy. I have included blotters I have seen, even if all that is known about them is the Series number. As with other promotional materials for the company, these often (but not always) carried a Series number printed in the lower right or lower left corner which helps identify it as a separate item.  Series C- blotters are Canadian, and those with numbers of 500+ are for Triscuits instead of Shredded Wheat.  Eventually I hope to have full descriptions on all of these, and any help where information is lacking is appreciated.  Please email me at jwalton971@aol.com.
