TRAILBLAZERS OF AMERICA – 1956
This set consists of nine different trucks to construct, made from three different cards. Hence each truck consists of three cards, numbered A, B, & C;. These were printed in red & black on cream-colored stock, and were done in conjunction with the North American Van Lines Company. They were designed by John [Wally] Walworth, and were one of the first of his creations for Nabisco.
For those not familiar with John Walworth, he created many of the most popular cereal box premiums of the 50’s and 60’s, for a number of different cereal and other companies. His creativity was celebrated in an exhibit at the University of Delaware in 1989, and an extremely useful catalog of this exhibit is still available from the University of Delaware Gallery. It contains a detailed list of many of his creations. To inquire about this catalog, go directly to John Walworth.
This set progresses from the oldest “vans” – a stage coach – to the most modern – a “van of the future.” One card, 5C, features a miniature box of Shredded Wheat with a picture of Rin Tin Tin on it. They were produced by Specialty Advertising Services, Inc.
