SHREDDED WHEAT ADVERTISING POST CARDS: SET XIII – SERIES 412 – HORIZONTAL VIEW OF FALLS & FACTORY WITH SIGNATURE LINE
Set XIII is an interesting set, in that the same card appears through three different varieties, and seems to have been used over a fairly long time period:
- With a bowl of Shredded Wheat at the lower right, and a text which reads:
I have just gone through this wonderful plant and have seen them make Shredded Wheat. It is said to be the cleanest food factory in the world. You certainly would like Shredded Wheat even better than you do, if you could see it made” [1924]
- No bowl of Shredded Wheat, but text as above [1927]
- No bowl of Shredded Wheat, but text now reads:
I have just gone through this wonderful plant and have seen them make Shredded Wheat. It is said to be one of the cleanest food factories in the world. You certainly would like Shredded Wheat even better than you do, if you could see it made.” [1930]
Other points which differentiate these cards from one another:
Both A & B have a factory view with an almost smoky looking sky, and vehicles and people in front of the building. The Falls view at left is sharp and distinct, with individual leaves visible in the greenery in the forefront. On the C view, the factory view now has more distinct clouds, and the view has been “cleaned up” – no more vehicles and each tree is more distinct. On the other hand, the Falls view at left is now more muted and blurred – a softer effect.
In addition to the Series 412 number lower left, at lower right is the inscription, “Made in U.S.A.” On all these cards, there is a signature line at the bottom, above “The Home of Shredded Wheat.” These cards also use a new divided back with no particular distinguishing characteristics that are special to Shredded Wheat.
