STRAIGHT ARROW CARDS AND MAIL-IN PREMIUMS RADIO SHOWS AVAILABLE!
Because there is so much interest in Straight Arrow, this listing includes some of the mail-in premiums, as well as the four books of Straight Arrow cards, that were issued by Nabisco. Straight Arrow was a radio character owned wholly by Nabisco, which sponsored the show. He was an orphaned Native American boy who had been raised by a ranching family and took their name of Adams. It was not until he discovered his Indian heritage that he became “Straight Arrow” – an alternate identity he used to do good and help the unfortunate. This character was full blown in comic books issued by Magazine Enterpises, and in the radio shows. Of particular interest here are the inserts that were included in boxes of Shredded Wheat from 1949 to 1952, a total of 4 books of 36 cards – or 144 cards in total. Also of interest to Straight Arrow collectors are the Nabisco Theater cards, the first group of which portrayed Straight Arrow characters. Please check under that category as well.
The artist for these cards was Fred Meagher, who also drew the monthly comic book stories and most of the Straight Arrow comic book covers as well. He is noted here as an Indian illustrator and authority. Each book has a cover card, an index card that lists the contents, and 34 cards describing some aspect or skill of Native Americans. The first two books were printed in blue on gray cardboard; the last two were printed in green.
These cards were done for both a U.S and a Canadian audience, the Canadian version has only one book of 28 cards, printed in blue. It comes both English only and English and French. These can be distinguished from their American counterparts, as with the Toytown cards, in that they were noted as being one of 28 cards, instead of one of 36 cards. To arrive at this set of 28, some of the cards have, of course, been eliminated. The artwork is unchanged, although in some cases the images are slightly smaller. The printing and text is slightly different. My French Canadian lists are incomplete, and I would welcome further information. Please contact me at jwalton971@aol.com.

Some details of the above

12 Framed views These were the same views as the jigsaw puzzles. They come in frames with a cracked rustic look, and originally had a plastic overlay to protect the picture. I can confirm the following:
Straight Arrow deals out Justice to the Fur Swindler [courtesy of Bob Clark]
Straight Arrow Disarms the Outlaw Leader
Straight Arrow rescues Wounded Packy
Straight Arrow saves Princess Snowflower from the Grizzly
Straight Arrow with Packy and Fury, to the Rescue
Straight Arrow Indian Color Book – I have been told there were two of these, a large and a small. I have only seen the large. The pictures were done by Fred Meagher, and twelve of them replicate the jigsaw puzzle pictures above.
A few of the radio shows are still available on CDs from Audio Classic www.audio-classics.com or ordered at order@audio-classics.com. They have been cleaned and sound great.
The shows available are:
Stage from Calvados
Land of our Fathers
The Wasteland
The Long Summer
The Leader
Scourge
and the new show Crooked Trail
The POW-WOW [a onetime fan-zine for Straight Arrow fans, unfortunately now defunct] offers the same shows on audio tapes. Back issues of the POW-WOW journal are available as well. An SASE to:
POW-WOW
301 E. Buena Vista Avenue
North Augusta, SC 29841
will get the writer a flyer listing everything for sale
